Snowmobile rider hurt in Crystal Falls

CRYSTAL FALLS – The Iron County Sheriff’s Office responded to a snowmobile accident in Crystal Falls on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2:30 p.m.

The accident occurred on trail 113, approximately one-eighth of a mile south of M-69.

Gerard Schira, 54, of Chandler, Arizona, was traveling north when he lost control of his snowmobile and collided with a tree.

He was taken to Northstar Health System for treatment of a suspected leg fracture. Officers reported that Schira had not been drinking, however excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division and Northstar EMS.
