Mountaineers battle

IRON MOUNTAIN – Iron Mountain, playing its third game in four nights, hung with Mid-Peninsula co-leader Negaunee for a half before running out of gas and falling 40-26 Thursday night.

“We played with a lot of intensity, played hard,” Mountaineer coach Ginger Moore said. “I think we took Negaunee a little bit by surprise.”

Alyssa Khor led the Mountaineers with nine points. Elli McCole added six and Vita Hill has five.

Moore said the Miners, led by Aleda Johnson’s 15 points, turned up their game in the second half to separate from the Mountaineers after leading by just one at halftime.

“They put a lot more pressure on the ball in the half-court set,” Moore said. “It made it more difficult for us to drive and get good looks. And they started hitting some shots.”

The Miners outscored IM 26-13 in the second half.

“We just seemed a little tired,” Moore said. “It’s one of those things, three games in four nights, everyone is going through it right now, so it’s not an excuse. We were just a little more flat after halftime.”

Still, Moore saw improvement against a team that whipped the Mountaineers by 30 in an earlier meeting this season.

“All in all, strides were made,” she said. “We’re definitely improving. Our goal this second time around the league is to see how we compare, so we can tell how much we improved.”

Mountaineers (1-13, 0-8) host Manistique Monday.

Iron Mountain’s jayvees, with Katie Brule totaling 17 points, downed Ishpeming 54-36. IM’s frosh bowed to Marquette 57-32.
