Rockets go deep, knock off ND

FELCH – Rapid River outshot North Dickinson 71-56 in a Skyline Conference boys basketball game highlighted by 24 three-point field goals at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium Wednesday.

The Rockets nailed 14 of 19 triples, with six from Hayden Hardwick and four from Jake Pearson.

“There was not a lot of defense,” Nordics coach Chris Mattson said. “If we don’t defend the perimeter better than we did we’re not going to win another game.”

Hardwick collected 34 points and Pearson added 19.

“They were a two-headed monster,” Mattson said. “We didn’t play our best but you have to tip your hat to (Rockets coach) Richard Poma and his kids. They shot the lights out. That’s amazing.”

Hardwick scored 13 points in the first quarter when the Rockets pulled ahead 15-12. Pearson popped in nine second-quarter points to give the Rockets a 33-20 halftime cushion.

“We hit a dryspell similar to last night (against Forest Park),” said Mattson, his Nordics mustering eight second-period points Wednesday. “They kicked it into gear.”

The Rockets, behind 16 Hardwick points, posted a 38-36 edge in the second half. Pearson had eight fourth-quarter points.

“My team has to get better at defending and rebounding,” Mattson said. “Rapid deserved to win. They did all the little things and hit too many shots.”

Logan O’Neil netted 16 points and Reggie Johnson had 13 for the Nordics.

North Dickinson (8-5, 3-5) travels Friday to Republic-Michigamme.

Rapid River won the junior varsity game.
