Knights own district meet

NORWAY – Norway experienced little difficulty taking home the Division 4 District 198 team wrestling title Wednesday.

The Knights, capitalizing on eight forfeited weight classes, downed Iron Mountain 51-18. The Mountaineers edged Bark River-Harris 30-28 in the district semifinal.

Only five weight classes were decided in the district final.

“I felt the match went well even though giving up four matches,” Norway Coach Nick Burklund said. “We moved kids around to get the best matches. The kids that wrestled kept the matches close and the matches could have gone either way.

“Those are the kind of matches you like to see going further into the state tournament. It’s important not to get pinned and give up six points in team matches especially when you know you have the numbers to get points back.”

Iron Mountain’s Jared Gauthier (135) blanked Donny Houle 4-0; Aaron Bolo (145) recorded a takedown in overtime to nip Cody Spade 9-7; Brayden Fitzpatrick (215) topped Shane Brasil 6-4, and James Christiansen (189) outpointed Travis Moon 12-5.

Norway’s Tanner Gonzalez (140) shut out Corbin Henkel 3-0. Spade notched two points in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime with Bolo.

In the district opener, Iron Mountain’s Bolo (140) and Christiansen (189) posted pins. The Mountaineers also tallied 18 forfeit points while the Broncos had 18.

Bark River-Harris also won two matches, with Curtis Labadie (215) decisioning Fitzpatrick 16-2 and Tyler Labadie (152) registered a last-second pin on Jacob Weslin.

Norway advances to the team regional at Manistique Wednesday.

Norway, Iron Mountain and Bark River-Harris are part of the MHSAA individual district at Newberry Saturday.

“The kids are wrestling well,” Burklund said. “They did well at conference on Saturday. They knew the first step was to make weight tonight, then go wrestle tough and they did.

“We have been talking all season about goals and how it takes the little things to reach them and so far they have been paying off. We have a lot of work to do to get ready for team regionals.”
