One killed, one hurt in separate snowmobile crashes

IRON MOUNTAIN – One snowmobiler was killed and another was injured in separate accidents in Dickinson and Florence counties.

Florence County Sheriff Jeff Rickaby said a DePere, Wis., was man was killed this morning, while Michigan State Police at the Iron Mountain Post investigated a snowmobile crash Friday involving an Iron Mountain man.

Sheriff Rickaby said his department received a call at 1:52 a.m. today of a snowmobile crash on Tucker Road approximately one half mile east of State Highway 139 in the town of Tipler.

Russell H. Krause, 48, of DePere, was found dead by companions after his snowmobile left Tucker Road and struck a tree, 102 feet from the edge of the road.

The victim was wearing protective equipment at the time of the crash, yet he died immediately upon impact with the tree, Sheriff Rickaby said.

Both alcohol and speed were contributing factors to the crash, he said.

In Dickinson County, state police responded to a personal injury crash involving a snowmobile Friday at approximately 3:30 p.m. on private property located on County Road 607 near Johnson Road in Breitung Township.

The investigation determined that the operator of the snowmobile, Kyle Erickson, 40, lost control of the snowmobile, driving it into a group of pine trees, where he was struck in the head by several branches.

Erickson was able to walk to his residence and call for assistance.

He was transported by ambulance to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

Erickson was not wearing a helmet, police said. Assisting at the scene was integrated First Response Ambulance.
