DUNBAR, Wis. – Northland International University will host the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference first playdate at the Pioneer Athletic Center Saturday.
Teams participating are Concordia University, Marquette, UW- Oshkosh, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Parkside, UW-Platteville and UW- Whitewater.
The Pioneer men are just starting their season in the second semester. They played non-conference match last week at Michigan Tech University.
Coach Dave Herron, with tongue in cheek, noted, “It was real sloppy and unpredictable, very difficult and then we had to drive home.
“Our play wasn’t as bad as the weather and I really was not disappointed. We showed promise.”
Minshik Park and Jay Hale will handle the challenge of setting duties. Michael Stephenson and Jared Kimbrough will be asked to be strong at the middle blocker spot. Jordan Edgecombe is a physically strong athlete that will need to play within the skills of the game to be effective. Rob May, Dan Herman and Ethan Miller will provide defensive stops.
“We have some players this year that could develop and contribute,” Herron said. “They just need to work hard and improve.”
Saturday will be a challenge for NIU as strong teams to comprise the field. The Pioneers will play at 10 a.m. against Whitewater; noon, Oshkosh; 2 p.m., Marquette, and 3 p.m., Oshkosh Two.
“Our only goal for Saturday is to play the game well and play the game together,” Herron said. “That is something we can build on.”
