IRON MOUNTAIN – Marie LaBay, 91, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at HCR ManorCare Heath Services in Kingsford.
She was born on Sept. 19, 1922, in Iron River, daughter of the late John and Wilhelmina (Blink) Lassi. She married the love of her life, Miklos “Mike” LaBay on March 25, 1944, at Mt. Carmel Church in Chicago, and he preceded her in death just three weeks ago on Jan, 4, 2014, after nearly 70 wonderful years together. She was the last of eight children born to her Finnish Immigrant parents.
Marie was very devoted to her faith and her church, the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was an avid reader and an excellent cook. She enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles and trips the casino. Marie was at her happiest being a wonderful, warm and Loving Mother. She was thought of by her family as the “June Cleaver” of house. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Mike; a devoted Mother to her daughters; a devoted Grandmother to her grandchildren; and a devoted Aunt to her nieces and nephews, some of whom she had a hand in raising.
More than anything, she cherished her time spent with family and friends. Marie had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She will be truly missed by all who knew her and loved her.
Marie is survived by her daughters, Sherry Gulberg of Iron Mountain and Denise (Luke) Ackerman of Chicago; grandchildren, Taunya (James) Hagen and Christal Ackerman.
The funeral service will take place in the spring of 2014.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.
