ALPHA – Helen S. Jackson, 91, of Alpha, passed away following a brief illness on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility inCrystal Falls.
She was born Nov. 10, 1922, in Detroit, daughter of the late Svante and Jennie (Ross) Toukkala. Helen graduated from Porter High School in Alpha, class of 1940. She worked in Detroit in the defense industry during World War II. Helen married James Jackson on March 24, 1943, and they celebrated their golden anniversary in 1993.
Helen was a member of the United Lutheran Church of Crystal Falls and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2891 Auxillary in Crystal Falls. She enjoyed camping, making quilts and playing bingo and cards with her many friends. Helen loved her family dearly.
She is survived by her son, Larry Jackson; daughter, Jill (Keith) Braue; and granddaughter, Krystina.
In addition to her parents and husband, James, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Suzanne; two sisters, Aili Hohman and Shirley Kudwa; and three brothers, Eino, Toivo and Raymond.
Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 27, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls. The celebration of life service will follow at 11 a.m., at the church. Pastor Michael Laakko will officiate.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Helen’s memory to Northwoods Animal Shelter and United Lutheran Church.
