CRYSTAL FALLS – An Iron River woman accused of embezzling money from an elderly Crystal Falls Township woman has accepted a plea deal.
April Marie Stine, 33, had originally been charged with one felony count of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult, which is a five-year felony.
However, she pleaded guilty to the lesser felony charge of attempted embezzlement from a vulnerable adult.
Stine still faces a maximum penalty of two and a half years in prison when she is sentenced in Iron County Trial Court on March 10.
According to the criminal complaint in the case, Stine embezzled approximately $1,200 between April 11 and June 18 while she was working as the victim’s caregiver.
Stine testified that the victim gave her the money and refused to take it back. Her attorney Geoffrey Lawrence pointed out that she was still guilty, as she benefited from unjust enrichment.
