Fatal snowmobile crash in Chippewa County
SAULT STE. MARIE – A Canadian man died from injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident last week in Chippewa County’s Bruce Township.
The crash occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 on East 8 Mile Road, just east of M-129.
Troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie post of the Michigan State Police said Tuesday that four snowmobilers, including 61-year-old Ronald Kelly of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, were traveling east on East 8 Mile Road when they came to an unplowed section of the seasonal roadway.
Kelly’s snowmobile ran into the snowbank, causing him to be ejected from the machine and hit a tree.
Troopers said that Kelly was transported to War Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the accident, which remains under investigation, troopers added.
Assisting at the scene was the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department.
