KINGSFORD – Robert “Bob” Hammar, 87, of Kingsford, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Freeman’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Community.
He was born March 28, 1926, in Stambaugh, the son of the late Samuel and Christina (Johnson) Hammar.
Bob graduated from Stambaugh High School in 1944. During World War II he served in the Merchant Marines and in the U.S. Army where he was trained as an Investigator for Army Intelligence. When he returned to Stambaugh he worked for the M.A. Hanna Mining Co. Later he was employed for 23 years by the U.S. Postal Service, retiring as a supervisor from the sectional center in Kingsford.
Bob married Cleo E. Landstrom on June 28, 1947, at First Lutheran Church in Iron River. The couple moved to Kingsford in 1968. Cleo preceded Bob in death on Nov. 15, 2010.
He was a life member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Iron River. Bob had a sharp mind and enjoyed keeping up with and discusssing current events.
Bob was a gentle man with a kind heart and was a loving father to Robert B. (Diane) Hammar of Asheville, N.C., and Kris (Jim) Heirman of Kingsford, and grandfather to James Heirman Jr. of Kalamazoo. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Irving Hammar; and two sisters, Irene Echert and Violet Schafer.
Funeral services will be announced in spring and burial will be in Stambaugh Cemetery.
