Verna Molzahn

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Verna A. (Raisanen) Molzahn, 94, of Green Bay, passed away Monday, Jan. 13, 2014.

Verna was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Allouez “the copper country,” to Andrew and Hannah (Jukuri) Raisanen. While a young child, her family moved to Kingsford where her father built them one of the first houses in the Kingsford area. Verna graduated from Kingsford High School and worked for the Eisele Lumber and Coal Supply Co. in Iron Mountain before going to Green Bay and attending vocational school there.

While attending vocational school, Verna met her future husband at a young-adult gathering at First Presbyterian Church. She married Milton R. Molzahn of Green Bay on Jan. 22, 1944, and the couple lived in Green Bay.

Verna worked for the Madison telephone answering service, the Madison Detective Agency as a secretary, and then as office manager at the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co. office in Green Bay. Verna was a loving mother to her two children, Fred and Trudy. When she retired in 1966, Verna took great pleasure in visiting her daughter Trudy and her grandchildren, Kelly and Steven in Illinois.

Verna loved bowling in addition to many outdoor sports, including bicycling, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, canoeing, fishing and most of all camping and campfires. When they retired, Verna and Milt put in many very happy weeks traveling and camping with their travel trailer throughout Wisconsin. They worked as hosts for campers at the Potawatomi State Park campgrounds in Door County for many years.

Verna was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre who, she was happy to point out, was born on her 50th birthday.

Verna is survived by her son, Fred Molzahn of De Pere, Wis.; her daughter, Trudy (John) Sutton of Davis, Ill.; her granddaughter, Kelly (Paul) Everding of Freeport, Ill; her grandson, Steven (Lia) Sutton of McHenry, Ill.; two great-granddaughters, Johanna and Sophia Everding; her sister-in-law, Inez (Norman) Raisanen of Iron Mountain; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; her mother and father; her sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Henry Johnson; her brothers, Norman and Roy Raisanen; her brother and sister-in-law, Eldon and Doris Raisanen; and her nephew, Danny Raisanen.
