WIC girls dominate

EWEN – Meg Miatech posted a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds as West Iron County routed undermanned Ewen-Trout Creek 57-28 in non-conference girls basketball Tuesday.

“We went for an uptempo game, pushed the ball up the floor and put ourselves in good position to take good shots,” Wykons coach Joe Serbentas said.

West Iron County, also getting six points each from Alexis Golfis, Lizzi Pellizzer and Erin Angeli, shot 54 percent for the game.

“We got a lot of nice 6-to-8 foot looks,” Serbentas said. “Miatech was a force inside. She does what she does, bangs around inside, pulls down a lot of rebounds, and gets putbacks. She did a really good job of running the break too.”

The Wykons’ press worked to force several Ewen-Trout Creek turnovers. And with just six players dressed, fatigue became a factor for the hosts.

West Iron County, also a JV winner, improved to 2-6 for the season. The Wykons host Houghton Friday.
