Ronald Olson

AURORA, Wis. – Ronald A. “Ole” Olson, 80, of Aurora, passed away on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Feb. 14, 1933, in Milwaukee, son of the late Harry and Verna (Dettmann) Olson. Ron graduated from Kingsford High School, class of 1951, and was a lifelong resident of Aurora. For four years during the Korean War, 1951-1954, he served in the U.S. Navy as a medic with the (UDT) Underwater Demolition Team. Ron married Margaret Weber on Sept. 15, 1956 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford.

For a time, he worked as a truck driver for Clairmont Transfer. Ron then owned and operated Ole’s Bar in Aurora for 16 years. He purchased his own semi and leased to Gunville Trucking for more than 22 years, until recently when macular degeneration diminished his sight. He truly loved his truck and being on the road.

Ron was a lifelong member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), United Commercial Travelers (UCT), American Legion and AMVETS. Ron enjoyed playing cribbage, fishing and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, for whom he would bake “Papa Bread.” He would always keep an assortment of their favorite pop behind the family room door. He was very proud of his grandchildren’s accomplishments, and visits from his five-month-old great-grandson put a sparkle in his tired eyes and lessened his discomfort. He had a quick sense of humor and never missed making his rounds to camps during hunting season for some friendly kibitzing with the boys.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Margaret; a son, Jon (Tami) Olson of Kingsford; two daughters, Rona (Alan) Lukazewski of Madison, Wis., and Lori (Gene) Larson of Salem, Ore.; two sisters, Shirley Podjaski of Menomonee Falls, Wis., and Carol (Ray) Phelps of Kingsford; three sisters-in-law, Dee Weber of Aurora, Gerry Weber of Aurora, and Doris Brown of Missouri; four grandchildren, Erik Larson of San Bernadino, Calif., Michael (Meghan) Olson of Kingsford, Kaylin Olson of Kingsford and Daniel Olson, U.S. Air Force; one great-grandson, Andrew Olson; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain; and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford.

Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Rev. Thomas Mackey will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit Loan Closet or to Unity Hospice at www.unityhospice.org or 800-990-9249.
