CRYSTAL FALLS – Lexi Gussert became U.P. basketball’s all-time leading scorer and unbeaten Forest Park raced past Bark River-Harris 71-41 in Skyline Conference girls basketball at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium Friday.
Gussert, who scored 24 points on the night and raised her career total to 2,143, erased the girls standard of 2,131 set by Allison Bailey of Ewen-Trout Creek (1994-1997).
Gussert tallied her 13th point with 27 seconds left in the first half to move past Bailey. The future Michigan State Spartan didn’t stop there, scoring late in the third quarter to clip the U.P. boys standard of 2,140 established by Dominic Jacobetti Jr. of Negaunee.
“It’s just cool,” Gussert said. “I can share this with my school and my team. I couldn’t do it without my team.”
Gussert also contributed 18 rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots.
“Having Lexi is a one in a million,” Forest Park Coach Jeff Syrjanen noted.
The Lady Trojans dispatched the Broncos with a 21-4 first-quarter blitz.
“We got off running tonight,” said Syrjanen, noting his team experienced a slow start against Mid Peninsula Wednesday. “We play better when we play up-tempo.”
Junior Sierra Robarge chipped in 12 points, hitting six of eight shots from the floor.
“She had a real nice game,” said Syrjanen, also citing Kaitlyn Bradley for coming off the bench to connect on three of four shots.
Kelsi Hendrickson and Maria Stankewicz each handed out three assists and Abby Nylund had three steals.
“I think we still need to work on finishing,” Gussert said. “It was a huge home win and a huge team win for us.”
Forest Park (9-0, 6-0) visits North Dickinson Tuesday.
Forest Park’s unbeaten junior varsity downed Bark River 47-36.
