Nordics find balance

FELCH – Buoyed by strong third quarter, North Dickinson pulled away from Republic-Michigamme for its first Skyline Conference victory of the season, earning a 56-41 decision Thursday night at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium.

“This was the kind of game we though we’d be successful with if we did the things we wanted to accomplish,” Nordics head coach Chris Mattson said. “Republic stuck around. They played hard the whole game.”

A late bucket at the end of the second quarter allowed the Nordics to go the break up eight. In the third, North Dickinson outscored the Hawks 21-7 to take command of the game.

“The story was the third quarter,” Mattson said. “We came out with more energy. The offense came around a bit. We moved the ball around well and got some good looks.”

Reggie Johnson (13), Noah Berg (11) and Justin Clark (10) led a balanced Nordic scoring sheet.

“We had guys making unselfish plays, and came away with a nice win,” Mattson said.

North Dickinson’s jayvees coasted to a 68-49 triumph.

The Nordics (4-1, 1-1) head to Norway Monday. North Dickinson’s home game against North Central cancelled from earlier this week will be played Saturday, Jan. 18. JV starts at 1 p.m. with the varsity to follow around 2:30 p.m.
