Miklos E. “Mike” LaBay
IRON MOUNTAIN – Miklos E. “Mike” LaBay, 93, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at his home. He was born on Nov. 4, 1920, in Crystal Falls, son of the late Miklos and Irene (Novak) LaBay. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served proudly with the Sea Bee’s, being honorably discharged on Nov. 21, 1945. Mike married Ina “Marie” Lassi on March 25, 1944 at the Mt. Carmel Church in Chicago. They spent nearly 70 wonderful years together. Mike enjoyed gardening, golfing and fishing. He really looked forward to deer hunting every year with his son in-law. He truly enjoyed his time working as a heavy equipment operator for the union. He also loved time spent talking and having coffee with his very dear friends at McDonald’s. Mike was very excited and honored to go on the Honor Flight with his son in-law Luke this past September. Most of all, he loved time spent with family. He was a very devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather to his family. He and Marie were the love of each other’s lives, they were inseparable. He always had time for his daughters and grandchildren. He had a very adventurous spirit, always willing to try something new.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Marie LaBay of Iron Mountain; daughters, Sherry Gulberg of Iron Mountain and Denise (Luke) Ackerman of Chicago; grandchildren, Taunya (James) Hagen and Christal Ackerman; brother, Ernie LaBay of McHenry, Ill.; sisters, Rosie Chiesa of Crystal Falls and Marge Smithson of Alpha.
The funeral service and Full Military Honors will take place in the Spring of 2014.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
