Gussert drops 36 in rout of Wykons
IRON RIVER – Michigan State recruit Lexi Gussert scored 36 points – 15 in the first quarter – as Forest Park rolled to a 66-25 win over West Iron County in non-conference girls basketball Friday.
“We rotated lots of people,” said Forest Park (7-0) coach Jeff Syrjanen. “Kendrick Campbell came out on fire,” he added, noting a 25-4 first quarter lead.
Gussert drained six three-pointers and was the game’s leading rebounder with eight.
“What are you going to do,” West Iron coach Joe Serbantas said of facing Gussert. “I had my best player defending her (Cassilyn Pellizzer) and she’ll drain a three-pointer. I wanted her to take the outside shot instead of going to the basket. But give her a foot and she’ll hit the three. Whoever she plays, she’s going to get her points. She works the ball to the other girls – it’s a snowball effect. With the cast they have around her, they’re poised for a state championship.”
Campbell finished with 10 points for the Trojans and Sierra Robarge netted seven.
West Iron (1-6) was led by Alexis Golfis, who scored 11.
“We asked them to come out and have a good start and they came out and hit good shots,” said Syrjanen. “We’ve been working on three things in practice: conditioning, shooting and defense. We play a transition defense and a lot of teams aren’t used to that.”
The Trojans won the jayvee game 44-40, led by Katie McCole’s 12 points. Emmy Kinner scored 14 for the Wykons.
Forest Park is set to travel Monday to Mid Peninsula, although frigid weather could put that game on the shelf.
West Iron plays at North Dickinson on Tuesday.
