Mary Lynn Myllyla

ESCANABA – Mary Lynn Myllyla, 52, of 2013 12th Ave. South, Escanaba passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Dallas Regional Medical Center in Mesquite, Texas.

Mary Lynn Myllyla was born April 26, 1961, in Marquette, daughter of Kenneth and Rose (Dittrich) Myllyla.

Mary graduated from Escanaba High School in 1979. She is also a graduate of Bay de Noc Community College and Northern Michigan?University (NMU) with a master’s degree. Mary taught elementary school at Stephenson, Powers, Soo Hill and Rapid River. For the last five years she was teaching at St. Luis School in Gadsden, Ariz. She also did summer respite care for Lakestate Industries and Pathways.

Mary was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where she helped teach vacation bible school, was a choir member and cooked for Bay College student dinners. She enjoyed taking voice lessons from Sara Beck. Mary was a long-time member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She loved teaching and always did her best to help students succeed. She was teacher of the month during her first year in Gadsden. In her travels, she was always looking for new ideas to bring to her classroom.

Her nieces and nephews were her pride and joy. She spent her free time with them and took them on many travel adventures that would broaden their life experiences. Family camping trips were always exciting for her. She was an avid reader and enjoyed being a volunteer to the library board of directors and also helped with the building of Kid’s Kingdom in Ludington Park. Mary enjoyed planning family gatherings, especially at Christmas, and she started many family traditions that will live on for years to come.

Mary is survived by her father and mother, Kenneth and Rose (Dittrich) Myllyla of Escanaba; sister, Jane Collegnon of Escanaba; and her brother, Jim (Shelly) Myllyla of Kingsford; nieces and nephews, Cassandra Collegnon (Josh Mueller) of Oshkosh, Wis., Casey Collegnon (Kristina Brink) of Escanaba and Kalyn and Cole Myllyla of Kingsford.

She is further survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins and other close relatives.

She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Kevin Collegnon.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Eastern time) Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Mary will follow at 4 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba with Rev. Dean Peterson officiating.

Interment will take place at Park Cemetery in Marquette.
