BREITUNG TOWNSHIP – Carl Granquist, 91, of Breitung Township, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain. Carl was born on Aug. 24, 1922, in Michagamme, son of the late Sam and Ida (Rosenlav) Granquist.
Carl was a lifelong resident of this area and was a 1940 graduate of Kingsford High School. He was inducted into the United States Army on Feb. 8, 1943, and served during World War II with the 277 Coast Artillery Battalion. His overseas service was in the Aleutian Islands during Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operation. Carl was honorably discharged on Feb. 23, 1946. He married Elsie Covi on March 6, 1944. Carl had many jobs during his lifetime and finished the last 20 years of his working career as the custodian for East Elementary School.
He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50. Carl was a talented carpenter and had a passion for building homes. He also enjoyed tending his garden, fishing, story and joke telling and singing Swedish songs.
Carl is survived by three sons, David Granquist of Breitung Township, Alan (Lois) Granquist of Breitung Township and Terry (Theresa) Granquist of Norway; his daughter, MaryAnn (John) Webb of Apple Valley, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers.
Visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Lee Liverance will officiate.
Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory for Our Saviors Lutheran Church Resource Fund.
