Donald Bal

NORWAY – Donald S. Bal, 73, of Norway, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at his home “camp” on Upper Pine Creek Road in Norway.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1940, in Norway, son of the late Henry and Stella (Setlock) Bal.

Don married Janice Motto on June 22, 1963, at St. George Catholic Church in Bark River.

He enjoyed camping, going for rides, cutting fire wood, gardening, hunting season with his family, picking mushrooms, making sausage and applesauce, smoking fish and sausage, working on fixing the roads with his tractor, raising fish in his pond, taking care of his dog and many other dogs, winding the clock, talking to people, helping his boys, buying TVs, salmon and lake trout fishing, wintering in Texas, watching the boats in Sault Ste. Marie while camping, and always kept the fire going.

Don worked as a telegrapher for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad for nine years, and worked for 30 years as a traffic manager for Mead Paper in Escanaba, before retiring in 1998.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jan; sons, Timothy Bal of Hermansville, Jeff (Jane) Bal of Crystal Falls and Craig (Brenda Solda) Bal of Powers; grandchildren, Jessica, Kyle, Andrea and Mitchell Bal; sisters, Barbara (John) Hafeman of Spalding and Dianne Williams of Austin, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Kay Bal; sister-in-law, Donna Smith; and brothers-in-law, John Smith and Gary Williams.

Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 2, from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at noon at the church, with Fr. Timothy Ekaitis presiding.
