Ronald Johnson

KINGSFORD – Ronald A. Johnson, 79, of Kingsford, passed away peacefully at his home on Christmas Day surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Oct. 1, 1934, in Aurora, son of the late Melvin and Jenny (Fernquist) Johnson. He attended school in Crystal Falls, Homestead and Kingsford. After high school, he went on to attend a Wisconsin tech school, earning a degree in auto tech and welding.

Ronald married Lola Hansen on Jan. 16, 1960, and they spent nearly 54 wonderful years together.

As a young man, Ronald loved to sing and play his guitar, banjo, and “squeezebox.” Ron enjoyed the outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, berry picking or searching for mushrooms. His heart was most at peace at his beloved Carney Lake and nothing pleased him more than to be there, surrounded by family.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Palmgren Sjoquist; five brothers, Carl Palmgren Jr., Norman Palmgren, Ernest (Joanne Chandler) Johnson, Robert Johnson and Gerald (Judy) Johnson; a son, James M. Johnson; and a granddaughter, Jessica Johnson.

Ron is survived by his loving wife, Lola Johnson of Kingsford; a daughter, Cindy Johnson of Ledyard, Conn.; four sons, Gene (Julie) Johnson of Stephenson, Dan (Heike Sue) Johnson of Kingsford, Darryl (Jenn) Johnson of Quinnesec, and Doug (Kris) Johnson of Breitung Township; a brother, Glenn (Dorothy) Johnson of Homestead; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his first wife, Barbara (Lloyd) Tharp; and a large extended family.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Dec. 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

The funeral service will follow Monday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Doug Johnson will officiate.

In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in his memory.
