Boy dies in Harris Township fire
MENOMINEE – An eight-year-old boy died as a result of a fire in a mobile home early today in Harris Township, said Menominee County Sheriff Kenny Marks.
The fire was reported at 1:11 a.m. by a neighbor and a family member, Marks said. There were four occupants asleep in the mobile home – a father, mother, daughter and son. Three family members escaped, but the boy was trapped.
The home is located at N16935 County Road 551, one mile north of U.S. 2.
Hannahville police officers, Menominee County deputies and Harris Township firefighters arrived on scene and found a fully engulfed structure fire with flames and heavy smoke. Firefighters found the boy in the trailer and got him out.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated by officers and Rampart EMS transported the child to St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. According to the medical examiner, the preliminary determination is that the child died of smoke inhalation.
The father was transported to St. Francis and treated for cuts sustained while he was trying to get his family out of the burning home. The mother and daughter were both transported to St. Francis and treated for smoke inhalation.
A Menominee County deputy was taken to the Emergency Room and treated for smoke inhalation. Status of the patients is unknown at this time, Marks said.
A Menominee County Sheriff Department detective trained to examine fires was called to investigate, along with the Menominee County medical examiner. The state fire investigator from Gaylord was also called to the scene.
The Menominee County Victim Services Unit supplied temporary clothing and shelter. The American Red Cross, Iron Mountain Chapter has been contacted for longer-term assistance to help the family.
