GREEN BAY, Wis. – Robert “Bob” Merckx, 82, of Green Bay, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at Alpha Concepts in Howard, Wis. with his family at his side.
He was born Oct. 20, 1931, in Green Bay, the son of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Schampers) Merckx.
Robert married Mary Ann Michel in Green Bay on May, 31, 1952.
He attended Green Bay Central Catholic High School where he was a decorated football player and was offered a scholarship to the University of Georgia. He proudly served his country during the Korean War for two years as sergeant 1st class U.S. Army.
Bob was a member of St. Jude Church, Elks Club, and Pazaza Club in Green Bay. He was employed by Liebman Packing Co., Northwestern Insulation Co. and co-founded Quality Insulation in 1981, where he retired at the age of 59.
Bob enjoyed life at every age! He very much enjoyed socializing with friends and telling stories of past experiences. If he wasn’t hunting or fishing with his son Bill or grandson Nick, he loved to play cards with the guys and truly enjoyed the “feisty” cribbage games with his wife. He loved music and dancing, and was very proud of his gardening skills. His ability to make a great “wood fired” chicken booyah was well known.
Bob loved his five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; they gave him great joy and contentment. In 1993 they built their retirement home on Laurel Lake in Three Lakes, Wis. and lived there before coming home to Green Bay in 2002. With his wife Mary Ann, Bob enjoyed trips to Florida, California and living “Up North.”
His children will always remember him as a hardworking person, with a very strong sense of integrity, and credence that “if you want respect, give respect.”
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann of more than 61 years; two sons Peter (Shelby) Merckx of Florence, Wis., and William “Bill” Merckx of Green Bay; one sister, Betty (Evert) Krull of Green Bay; five grandchildren, Nick Merckx of Lake Tomahawk, Wis., Michelle (Jason) Merckx of Forestville, Wis., Sally Merckx of Milwaukee, Michael (Leslie) Merckx of Savannah, Ga., and Marcus Merckx, (fiance Tricia) of Jacksonport, Wis.; two great-grandsons, David and Carter and a great-granddaughter, Halie, with one additional great-granddaughter due soon. They would also like to recognize Sylvia Schultz as a very special cousin.
addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Merckx.
The family wishes to thank Diane Merckx for the love and care she provided. Thank you Alpha Concepts and all their loving staff for making Bob comfortable. They would also like to thank Hospice Advantage and especially Stephanie and Mary Grace, you are truly angels form GOD!
