Ugly, but Nordics will take it

IRON MOUNTAIN – With points at a premium, North Dickinson did just enough in the second half to surpass Iron Mountain 32-27 in non-conference boys basketball Monday night.

“We feel fortunate to come out of this game with a win,” Nordics coach Chris Mattson said.

Justin Clark led the Nordics with 12 points, and Logan O’Neil added 10, as North Dickinson outscored Iron Mountain 23-16 in the second half after trailing by two at the break.

“Neither team could make a bucket in the first half,” Mattson said. “We came out and scored 11 in the third quarter. Normally that doesn’t sound like a lot, but tonight it seemed like 25.”

North Dickinson, able to break Iron Mountain’s press late in the game, opened up a seven-point lead around the 2:00 minute mark. Logan O’Neil had a fast-break lay-in, and Clark added another.

“We defended well enough to win,” Mattson said. “It wasn’t great defense. Both teams had a hard time putting the ball in the bucket.”

No player reached double figures in scoring for the Mountaineers.

“We didn’t shoot well, but I’m not taking anything away from North Dickinson because they have competitive kids, they are athletic, and they play hard” Mountaineers coach Bucky Johnson said. “But we sure didn’t get any loose balls tonight, and we got out-hustled.

“When the shots are not going in, you have to get some second shots. You have to get the loose balls, get more opportunities. And we didn’t do that tonight.”

Mark Beauchamp and Ryan Ducharme each canned fourth-quarter treys for the Mountaineers, but struggles at the foul line hurt IM’s chances late. The Mountaineers were 6-of-13 from the stripe, just 4-of-9 in the final quarter.

“It was an ugly game, and we didn’t play very well,” Johnson said. “We just have to work harder and try to get better.”

Iron Mountain (1-2) hosts Norway Friday.

North Dickinson (1-1) hosts Norway Thursday.

“The guys were a little bummed because they didn’t play as well as they maybe could have, but we’ll take the win. We know we have to get batter. Nothing is going to be easy this season. We’re going to have to fight for everything we get.”

In jayvee action, Carson Wonders scored a game-high 12 points for the Mountaineers in a 59-29 win.
