IM rally falls short

GWINN – Iron Mountain rebounded from a 25-14 halftime deficit but couldn’t complete a comeback, falling 48-39 in Mid-Peninsula boys basketball Thursday.

“We didn’t get off to a good start, didn’t play well in the first half,” Mountaineers coach Bucky Johnson said. “But the kids battled really hard in the second half. I’m proud of them for that.”

The Mountaineers forged a 32-32 tie late in third quarter, but couldn’t get over the hump.

Jack Merrill scored all 13 of his points in the second half to lead the Mountaineers.

“Jack really came alive in the second half,” Johnson said.

Owen DeVooght led Gwinn with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Morse added 11 points.

“The big difference was our defense,” Gwinn coach Darren Sinnaeve said. “We were outstanding in our full court press and in our half court play. We held (IM) to four points in the first 10 minutes of the game.”

Iron Mountain (1-1, 1-1) host North Dickinson Monday.
