Wrestling: Strong showing for Flivvers in season opener
MANISTIQUE – Kingsford opened the high school wrestling season with a pair of close matches against Munising and Manistique here Wednesday afternoon.
The Flivvers fell to Munising 36-30 and lost to Manistique 35-24.
“We only had seven weight classes filled, so with that in mind we did really well for the start of the season,” Flivvers coach Torrey Adams said.
Against Munising, Kingsford received pins from Yury Hammar at 135 pounds, Eli Martonen at 140, Seth Collins at 145 and Justin Stenkevich at 189.
“I was pleased with our performance as a team,” Adams said. “We looked rather well conditioned and technically sound. We just didn’t have enough of the weight classes covered.”
Adams said that against Manistique, a few of the matches could have gone either way, but Kingsford just didn’t come out on top.
Flivver points came from Zach Jones at 119, Yury Hammar at 135 with a pin, Eli Martonen at 140 with a pin and Seth Collins at 152.
