Monona VanBeek

KINGSFORD – Monona B. VanBeek, 94, of Kingsford, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Evergreen Heights Assisted Living in Kingsford.

She was born in Poskin, Wis., daughter of the late Albert and Anna (Swan) Bjurman. After graduating from high school, Monona went on to attend college in Superior, Wis. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh.

Monona married Cornelius VanBeek on May 28, 1942, in Waynesville, Mo., and they have enjoyed 71 years of marriage together. Following her graduation from college, Monona began her work as an elementary school teacher and served in that capacity for 19 years. After retirement she traveled to many destinations with her husband. The couple spent many happy summers at their lake home in Shell Lake, Wis.

Monona is survived by her husband, Cornelius; four sons, Steven (Linda) VanBeek of Iron Mountain, Richard (Carlene) VanBeek of Appleton, Wis., Ronald (Andrea) VanBeek of Gastonia, N.C., and Scott VanBeek of Elkhorn, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Craig VanBeek, Troy (Amy) VanBeek, Tiffany VanBeek, Robert VanBeek, Angela (Chris) Turner, Mathew (Bethany) VanBeek, Eric (Liza) VanBeek, Dillon VanBeek and Christy VanBeek; 11 great-grandchildren, Nikolas, Haley, Ethan, Emerick, Ella, Veronica, Charlotte, Mallary, Alex, Evelynn and Bobbie; one great-great-grandchild, Travis; a sister, Laura Ray of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

Monona was preceded in death by her sisters, Lillian Johnston, Norma Flannigan and Florence Roe; and a brother, Leonard Bjurman.

Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Lee Liverance will officiate.

Burial will be in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.
