Free throws doom Lady Badgers

WABENO, Wis. – Brooklyn Wolosyn scored 14 points, but Niagara struggled at the foul line and fell to Laona/Wabeno 34-26 Thursday in non-conference girls basketball.

“Our zone defense seemed to get to the Rebels, but we couldn’t get anything going on offense in the second half,” Lady Badgers coach Laura Gunderson said.

The Badgers were just 9-for-24 at the free throw stripe.

“We had our opportunities,” Gunderson said.

A one-point game at the half, Laona/Wabeno out scored Niagara 25-16 in the second half.

“Overall, I thought the girls put in an outstanding effort,” Gunderson said. “They played defense, hustled and did the best they could. I’m proud of the effort.”

Niagara’s jayvees won. The Lady Badgers (0-3) opens league play Tuesday, hosting Wausaukee.
