Flivvers sweep Patriots to launch swim season
IRON MOUNTAIN – Kingsford stormed past Westwood to open the high school swimming & diving season at the Northern Lights YMCA-Dickinson Center.
The Flivver boys posted a 114-46 decision while the girls prevailed 96-70.
“We made great use of the first two weeks of practice and came off the blocks strong and hard,” said Kingsford Coach Keith Freeman. “This was a great meet to kick off the season because the teams skill levels were fairly evenly matched. This allowed our new swimmers to have a little taste of success. Our returning swimmers also got some great competition from the Patriots and from each other. There were some great races and some outstanding upsets.”
Freeman cited new swimmers Andrea Rake and Toni DeMers for “some awesome performances” in the 100 fly and 100 back, respectively. He was also impressed with a 13.08-second improvement by Lynea Hautamaki in the 100 fly.
Freeman said David Plumley “pulled off a great team upset in the 200 IM and was followed up by great performances by Tanner Walsh and Leo Stelmaszek in the 100 fly.”
Dan Fleming and Matt Bieti both completed the 500 free for the first time after only two weeks of training.
“Coach (Tony) Adams and myself were very impressed with all the performances,” Freeman said. “We still have a lot of work to do on our starts and turns, but everything in between was starting to look very nice.”
Kingsford’s next meet is 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, with Ishpeming-Negaunee visiting.
