Willard “Pete” Peterson

IRON MOUNTAIN – Pete was 88 when he went to be with the Lord on Oct. 30, 2013. He succumbed to pneumonia and passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Pete was born in Iron Mountain, grew up in Kingsford and graduated from Kingsford High School in 1943. He liked to say he was made in America with Swedish parts.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served bravely and with great pride in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war he returned home to Michigan before moving on to Chicago, where he enrolled at North Park College and met Joan, his loving wife of 63 years.

He was a star basketball player and also excelled at baseball and football. After graduation, followed by seminary at Augustana College, he served as a minister in Leroy.

Life and career took Pete to Mt. Prospect, Ill., where he and Joan lived and raised their family for more than 45 years and where Pete was an active and dedicated member of Northwest Covenant Church.

Pete was always involved in the lives of his children, coaching baseball and leading youth groups at church. Pete and Joan retired to Bethany Beach, Mich., where they lived happily for 15 years and were always active in the life of the Bethany Beach Community and Harbert Community Church.

Pete was a loving and devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Joan; five children, David, Ken, Carol, Jon-Daniel and Thom; eight grandchildren, Andrew, Jennifer, Allison, Anna, Jon, David, Kelsey and Tim; and eight great-grandchildren, Josie, Taylor, Linnea, Avril, Landon, Brynn, Levi and Teagan.

His life was dedicated to Christ and he was a constant example of a life lived full of grace. He will be missed by all of his many friends and family.

A memorial service will be held at Harbert Community Church in Sawyer at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time on Saturday, Nov. 23.
