GRAND MARAIS – Gerald “Jerry” Lee Alverson, 80, long-time resident of Grand Marais, retired in Escanaba, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.
He was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Rochester, son of the late Charles “Omer” and Kathleen (Carrier) Alverson.
Jerry proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, spending time in French Morocco, Africa. He was manager of the meat department at the A&P in Rochester and then owner and operator of the Sportsman Bar & Restaurant and Alverson’s Motel in Grand Marais for 30 years, retiring to Escanaba in 1995.
Jerry also loved camping, hunting and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his son, Don (Theresa) Alverson; his daughter, Paula (Jim) Shapy; two sisters, Phyllis (Ralph) Baker and Barbara Alverson; one brother, David (Chris) Alverson; two grandchildren, Jeff Alverson and Jennifer Bradley; two great-grandchildren, Reece and Logan Bradley; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Melvin and Charles Alverson; and one sister, Shirley Poindexter.
Honoring the wishes of Gerald Lee Alverson, his family will celebrate his life with a private family service in Minnesota at a later date.
His family requests that memorials be made in his name and directed to the Jacobetti Home for Veterans Member Assistance Fund (425 Fisher St., Marquette, MI 49855).
