Jalmer Kangas

CRYSTAL FALLS – Jalmer O. Kangas, 87, died on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

Jalmer was born May 23, 1926, in Mass City, the son of the late John and Alma (Moilanen) Kangas. Jalmer was a 1944 graduate of Greenland Township High School. Immediately following graduation, he was inducted into the United States Army. He served during World War II in France, Germany and Belgium. Jalmer returned from the war in 1946, and on Oct. 16, 1948, married Joyce Abramson in Pelkie, Mich. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

Jalmer worked as a logger, was manager of the Amasa Co-Op for a time and owned and operated Kangas Radio and Television Repair. He joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union in 1964, and worked as a construction electrician on various jobs across the country for the next 23 years, retiring in 1988.

Jalmer was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church. He was a life member and very involved in the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. Jalmer was a past worshipful master, past worthy patron, member of the White Shrine, Shriners, Knights Templar, Consistory and Royal Arch Masons. He was voted Mason of the year in 1990. Jalmer’s favorite time of the year was deer hunting season. He loved to hunt and fish.

Jalmer was an extremely talented handyman and repairman. He was counted on by friends and neighbors for his expertise in fixing everything. He was the one who designed the electronic timer for the Masonic Lodge snowman contest. Jalmer was also known for his wonderful sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by six sisters, Aileen Waldeck, Vivian West, and four infant sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two sons, Rodney (Susan) Kangas of Iron River and Bruce Kangas of Crystal Falls; grandchildren, Matthew (Heather) Kangas of Alamogordo, N.M., Michael (Angela) Kangas of Madison, Wis., and Amber Caldwell of Iron River; and great-grandchildren, Morgan, Bryson, Brynn, Max, Briar, Helen, Mason, Makayla and Trevor.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Christ United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls. Funeral services will follow at noon Wednesday at the church. Rev. Nate Reed will officiate. The Crystal Falls-Iron River Masonic Lodge 385 will conduct services at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Burial will be in the Alston Cemetery in Alston.
