American Legion Post 340 plans Veterans Day events
HERMANSVILLE – The Floriano-Stecker American Legion Post 340 of Hermansville will observe Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Marker in Hermansville.
The program schedule is as follows:
10:15 a.m. – Participants, veterans, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans Association, Sons of the American Legion, Ladies Auxiliary, and Boy Scouts meet at the club rooms. A continental breakfast will be served.
10:45 a.m. – March to the Veterans Memorial Marker (transportation will be available for veterans which to ride).
11 a.m. – Flag raising (program at Veterans Marker; sergeant-at-arms Gilbert Vandenhouten; prayer, chaplain James Vernon, Post 340; pledge to the flag, commander James Wash; musical selection, North Central High School Band, Tom Howerton, director; remarks by Commander James Wash; reading, Boy Scout Troop 578; musical selection, band; placing wreaths by various organizations; Taps.
The traditional Veterans Day dinner will be held Monday at the American Legion in Hermansville. Social hour will be from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and dinner served at 5:30 p.m.
Stanley Carlson of Faithorn is the main speaker for the program.
Carlson was born in Faithorn and attended Mullen and Faithorn grade school. After graduating from Hermansville High School in 1938 he worked at the Fox Farm and then in Chicago until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942.
After basic training he was sent to the European Theatre with the Big Red One 1st Infantry Division. He fought in North Africa, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy and the Rhineland.
He was awarded the European-African-Middle East Ribbon with four Bronze Stars and five Overseas Service Bars. He was also awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded at Omaha Beach on D-Day and at the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. He was discharged in 1945 and worked at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain for 27 years.
President Ella Gurgall of the Ladies Auxiliary will recognize members of the Auxiliary.
The Veterans Day dinner goes back to 1953 when the Auxiliary was organized.
Commander Wash will also pay tribute and honor Julius Halterman for 60 years of membership and Charles Kelly with 50 years of membership.
All Legion members, Auxiliary members, Vietnam Veterans Association members, Sons of the American Legion and their spouses and guests are invited.
Catered dinner of baked chicken and ham will be served. Suggested donation of $5 per person is asked.
