NIAGARA, Wis. – Delores C. Secrist, 81, of Niagara, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at her daughter’s home in Kingsford.
She was born on Jan. 9, 1932, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Tad and Clara (Jendryka) Hover. She attended Iron Mountain schools, graduating from Iron Mountain High School in 1950. She went on to attend Northern Michigan University where she received her master’s degree in teaching grades K-9, with a minor in special education. She taught at the surrounding schools until her retirement. After retiring, she worked as a security officer for the Niagara Paper Mill and Ford Airport.
Delores married Edward “Sonny” Secrist on Feb. 6, 1954, and he preceded her in death on June 11, 2008, after more than 54 wonderful years together. The couple resided in Kingsford where they raised five children, who were the center of Delores’ universe. After her retirement, Delores and Sonny spent winters in Arizona and Florida. They resided in Niagara during their later years.
Delores was a member of American Martyrs Church. She loved life. Dancing, roller skating, shopping and watching the Green Bay Packers were some of her hobbies. Most recently she enjoyed doing Karaoke. She truly loved people and had a great sense of humor. Delores was always the “Life of the Party.” Her grandchildren were also a big part of her life.
Delores is survived by her children, Gaye Lynn (Mwenda) Secrist of Maui, Hawaii, Dee Ann (Telly) Montanez of Draper, Utah, Sandra VanMarter of Kingsford and Edward “Eddie” (Ida) Secrist of Niagara; grandchildren, Travis VanMarter, Lynnsey VanMarter and Ashley Secrist; a sister, Dorothy (Clarence) Lindeman of Niagara; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her little Shih Tzu, Mindy.
She was preceded in death by her son, Larry; her son-in-law, David VanMarter; her siblings, Walter (Bernice) Hover, Leona (Frank) Harwath, Bernard Hover, Ted (Dorothy) Hover and an infant sister, Claire Ann.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will take place in the Niagara Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.
