Mountaineers outlast Ishpeming in five sets
IRON MOUNTAIN – Marti Pirkola hit 15 kills and Alena Herman and Kristen Gendron each served five aces as Iron Mountain held off Ishpeming 25-13, 9-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-12 in a Mid-Peninsula volleyball match here Thursday.
“All in all, it was just a good team effort,” Mountaineers coach Jeanne Newberry said. “It was a good match with a nice crowd. It was great to see all the fans show up in pink and we thank them for that.”
The match was the Mountaineers annual ‘Volley for the Cure’ as both teams wore pink jerseys to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Iron Mountain was in control in the first set but the momentum swayed toward the Hematite in sets two and three.
Jessica Spencer fired 19 kills for Ishpeming, a match high. Sinead Korvela added eight more. Ishpeming also served 14 aces.
Iron Mountain regained command of the match in the final two sets.
“We came out a with a little more motivation, and in the fifth set we just finished it off,” Newberry said.
Iron Mountain’s jayvees swept 25-12, 25-4, 15-5. The Mountaineers conclude regular season play Tuesday, hosting Westwood.

FELCH – North Dickinson swept North Central 3-0 in a Skyline match here Thursday evening.
The Nordics, now 13-2 in league play, play at Bark River Tuesday. ND’s jayvees also won.
