Iron Mountain takes down Mid-Pen leader

MANISTIQUE – Iron Mountain upset Mid-Peninsula Conference leader Manistique here Thursday evening, winning a four-set battle 25-12, 25-19, 15-25, 25-22.

“This was a nice win for the girls,” Mountaineers coach Jeanne Newberry said. “They played really well.”

The Mountaineers defense helped set the tone in the match. Sophomore Susie Hagan recorded 18 of the team’s 59 digs.

“Back row and team communication kept the momentum in our favor,” Newberry noted.

The Mountaineers also benefitted from strong serving, connecting on 61-of-69 in the match. Senior Mandy Haferkorn was a perfect 13-for-13 with three aces. Junior Marti Pirkola hit 10-for-10 with an ace, and junior Malia Brooks was 8-for-9.

“We’ve been keying in on serving and tonight’s consistent serving showed the practice paid off,” Newberry said.

Pirkola’s 8 kills led the Mountaineers. Alena Herman added six more. Bri Geyser notched 19 assists.

Newberry also commended Lindsey Tousignant’s effort on the weak side, Desi Bottesi’s work in the middle, and Cassie Feira’s strong play in front of the 10-foot line.

The Mountaineers improved to 5-4 in league play and hosts Gwinn Tuesday. Thursday’s home match against Ishpeming will be Pink Out, with the Mountaineers wearing pink jerseys to raise awareness for breast cancer. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink.

IM’s jayvees beat Manistique 25-22, 25-9, 14-16 to improve to 8-1 in MPC play. The team served 44-for-47 (94 percent). IM’s jayvees play in the Norway Invitational Saturday. Summary follows:
