Driver arrested after crashing into high school

ISHPEMING – An Ishpeming man was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly crashing his vehicle into Ishpeming High School.
Police said at about 1:47 a.m., a 29-year-old Ishpeming man driving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee was southbound on Third Street at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred.
According to witnesses, the driver locked up the brakes on his vehicle, which traveled through the intersection of Third and Pearl streets, went through the retaining wall between the school and the sidewalk and slammed into the brick wall of the building.
Police said the man then got out and fled the scene, and was found at his home, where they said he became uncooperative.
He was arrested on charges of drunk driving, fleeing the scene of an accident and resisting/obstructing.
The man was lodged at the Marquette County Jail and is now out on bond. Police said he was alone in the vehicle and suffered only bruises.
The man’s name is not being released until his arraignment.
