Briefcase left at IM post office not a threat

IRON MOUNTAIN – The Iron Mountain post office was evacuated for several hours on Tuesday afternoon after an employee discovered a suspicious, unattended briefcase in the lobby.

Iron Mountain Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene at 1:23 p.m.

Lt. Ed Mattson of the Iron Mountain Police Department said that the building was evacuated and Ludington Street from U.S. 2 to Carpenter Avenue was closed for safety reasons.

Postal inspectors were en route to the scene when the owner of the briefcase came back to the post office at about 4 p.m., said Lt. Mattson.

“It was determined that there was no threat,” he added.

Officers reopened the street and cleared the scene shortly thereafter.

Assisting at the scene was the Iron Mountain Department of Public Works.
