Westwood slips past ailing Norway, 16-12

NORWAY – Westwood overcame touchdowns from Taylor and Garrett Bonetti to beat shorthanded Norway 16-12 in Mid-Peninsula Conference football Saturday at Ronberg Field.

Both teams put up a touchdown in the first quarter, with Westwood’s Derek Wing rambling 65 yards and Garrett Bonetti going 16 yards.

In the second half, Westwood moved to 16-6 lead behind a 16-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Burke to Luke Duquette and a 30-yard field goal from Ryan Anttila.

Taylor Bonetti scored from a yard out with three seconds left in the game.

“The kids went to the end and played hard but we didn’t play well,” said Coach Bob Madigan, his Knights missing five starters.

Dropped passes hurt Norway’s chances.

“It’s a funny game and today was a tough day,” Madigan said. “We dropped some good passes.”

Zavier Gonzalez, a Norway standout on the day, grabbed a 65-yard pass to set up the final touchdown.

Norway stopped a Westwood threat in the second quarter when Nick Bal recovered a fumble at the 35. Andrew Duquette picked off a pass for Westwood.

On Friday, Norway (2-5, 1-3) hosts Gwinn and Westwood (2-6, 2-2), entertains Manistique.
