CRYSTAL FALLS – John “Chum” C. Wolak, 63, of Crystal Falls, passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Sept. 7, 1950, in Stambaugh, son of the late John and Barbara (Stalter) Wolak. John grew up in Alpha and attended school there. He married Sherry Bruce on Jan. 17, 1970, at the Baptist Church in Crystal Falls.
John was drafted into the U.S. Army in January 1970, and served in the Vietnam War. After serving for five months he was injured and became disabled on Dec. 3, 1970. He then moved back to Crystal Falls.
John enjoyed many hobbies, including fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, woodcarving, tying jigs, rock polishing, playing guitar, listening to music, and spending time with his family, friends and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sherry; one son, Donald (Riki Rouse) Wolak of Crystal Falls; one daughter, Dawn (Jim) Thoreson of Amasa; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Cooper, Jesse, Joslyn, Eric, Kyler and Siiri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Christopher Wolak and Steven Wolak; and one sister, Eva Wolak.
Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home of Crystal Falls.
A celebration of life service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Nate Reed will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.
The East Side Veteran’s Council will accord military honors at graveside.
