HOUGHTON – The man accused of killing an 84-year-old woman in Houghton Saturday will undergo a mental competency evaluation.

Timothy Cadeau, 29, of Houghton, was arraigned in 97th District Court in Houghton Monday.

About 11 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to an apparent breaking and entering at the residence of Geraldine Fouts at the Douglass House Apartments, where they found her dead. Cadeau also lives at the apartments.

Cadeau began his arraignment from the Houghton County Jail video videoconference. Judge Mark Wisti moved the hearing to the courtroom after Cadeau did not indicate he could understand Wisti’s questions. Cadeau remained unresponsive once in the courtroom.

Officers accompanying Cadeau said he has had mental health issues.

Wisti ordered Cadeau to undergo evaluation. No preliminary hearing has been scheduled.

Cadeau is charged with homicide – open murder, a felony punishable by life in prison, and first-degree home invasion, a 20-year felony.

He is lodged in the Houghton County Jail on $1 million bail.
