NIAGARA, Wis. – Niagara swept an M&O Conference rival and possible WIAA Division 4 regional challenger Tuesday.

Coach Carol St. Arnauld’s slow-starting Badgers rallied past Wausaukee 3-0 (27-25, 25-9, 25-20). They trailed 24-20 in the first game.

“We really weren’t in the flow of the game when we started off,” St. Arnauld said. “We really weren’t hitting the ball. We weren’t doing much of anything.

“At the end of game one, that’s when we started actually hitting the ball and did some good things. We put it together.”

Niagara breezed in the second set and built a big lead in the third before Wausaukee closed the gap.

“Winning that first game was huge,” St. Arnauld said.

Both teams came into the match shorthanded because of season-ending injuries. Niagara lost setter Abbey Bagnieschi while Wausaukee was without hitter Lauren Edlbeck.

“We’re both adjusting (to the injured players),” St. Arnauld said. “We ended up doing enough good things to win. We’re coming along and we have a ways to go but we’re making the right moves.”

Niagara’s Brooklyn Wolosyn and Shanna Nordell combined for 11 kills; Shelby Borchardt collected 59 digs, and Maria Miller had 10 assists. Wausaukee’s Crysta Clark and Ana Baca each notched six kills and Kaylor Delaet had 10 assists.

Niagara, third in the M&O Conference with a 6-2 log, travels to league-leading Coleman on Tuesday.

The WIAA tournament is less than a month away. Division 4 will not include Northern Lakes Conference-leading Laona-Wabeno, which plays in Division 3.

“That’s OK,” St. Arnauld said with a grin, her Badgers ousted by Wabeno in last year’s tournament.

Niagara, Florence, Goodman-Pembine and Wausaukee should all challenge in the Division 4 regional.

“Florence and Goodman-Pembine have to be in there,” St. Arnauld said. “They’re going to be contenders. I never count Wausaukee out. They’re going to make some adjustments.”

Kate Nawn – 4 kills, 1 assist; Mackenzie Gregg – 4 kills, 2 digs; Brooklyn Wolosyn – 6 kills, 4 digs, 4 assists; Madisin DePas – 8 digs; Shelby Borchardt – 4 kills, 59 digs, 1 assist; Myah Anderson – 2 kills, 2 assists; Shanna Nordell – 5 kills, 3 digs, 2 assists; Casey Spigarelli – 4 digs; Maria Miller – 1 kill, 2 digs, 10 assists; Asenija Zlaticanin – 2 digs.
