IRON MOUNTAIN – Ida Hartwell, 88, of Iron Mountain, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born Nov. 20, 1924, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Parisso and Teresa (Spera) Famiani. Ida grew up in Iron Mountain and graduated from Iron Mountain High School, class of 1943. She married Ernest Hartwell on April 20, 1947. Ernest preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 1987.
Ida worked during World War II as a riveter in Ypsilanti. After returning to Iron Mountain she worked for Hancock Wood Products for 29 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Ida enjoyed babysitting and spending time with her grandson. She loved making everyone laugh.
She is survived by two sons, James (Barbara) Hartwell, Richard Hartwell, both of Iron Mountain; one grandson, David Hartwell; one great-aunt, Dorothy Port of Escanaba; one sister-in-law, Mary Westgate of San Diego; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ida was preceded in death by two brothers, Nick Famiani, Louis Famiani; four sisters, Clara Gironimi, Celia Franceschini, Inez Vermeulen and Mary Famiani.
The visitation will be today from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Prayers will be recited at 4:30 p.m., today at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 5 p.m., today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
