Flivvers notch another victory
ISHPEMING – Unbeaten Kingsford, powered by a singles sweep, spilled Westwood 7-1 in high school girls tennis Tuesday.
Hannah Tresedder, Janay Walters, Santina Bianco and Katy Hicks led Flivver singles.
“Westwood had a fabricated singles lineup with one of their players out,” said Flivver coach Mark Shanks. “Westwood’s doubles did give us a push.”
Flivver No. 1 doubles Anna Shanks-Kate Lamy lost their first set of the year before bouncing back to win in three sets.
“That was an eye-opener,” Shanks said.
Kingsford added wins at No. 2 Ali VanRemortel-Jaelyn Jennings and No. 4 Abby Johnson-Kelsey Bennett.
“We had some good play today against a strong team in Kingsford,” Westwood coach Chris Jackson said. “We will look to use this experience to get better as the season comes to a close.”
Lacey Pietro and Westwood teammate Olivia Derocha at No. 3 doubles posted the Patriots’ lone victory, a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Megan VanPembrook and Taylor Jacobson.
“That was a good match,” Shanks noted.
Kingsford (11-0) visits Escanaba on Thursday.
The Great Northern Conference tournament, slated for Wednesday, Sept. 25, has been moved from Marquette to Kingsford.
“Marquette does not have enough courts to be able to accommodate the matches in a timely fashion and Kingsford was happy to accommodate,” said Marquette athletic director Jamie Tuma.

Iron Mountain 7
KINGSFORD – Shorthanded Iron Mountain recovered from a difficult setback to spill Gladstone 7-1 in high school girls tennis Tuesday.
“The girls performed really well after that tough loss to Kingsford (on Monday),” said Mountaineer coach Greg Stegall. “With Kate Bugni injured, we had to juggle things and it worked out.”
Kate and Emily Bugni trailed 6-5 in the first set of their No. 2 doubles match with Kingsford’s Ali VanRemortel and Jaelyn Jennings before Kate suffered a knee injury.
In Tuesday’s match with Gladstone, Emily Bugni moved to No. 3 singles for her first match there and prevailed 6-3, 6-2.
Kate Brule and Olivia Truscott also triumphed for the Mountaineers.
“Both had their hands full with very worthy, hard-hitting opponents (in No. 1 Lauren Parrott and No. 2 Bridget Becker),” Stegall said. “Both Mountaineers played their best tennis and showed real poise and composure on pressure points. That was the difference.”
Elli McCole and Emily Chang captured No. 1 doubles while Kathryn Brown-Cayla Carey (No. 2) and Hannah Hakamaki-Grace Hansen (No. 3) moved up for wins. The new No. 4 doubles of Abby Theisen-Carrie Oslund chipped in another win.
“Elli and Emily stepped up and played well,” Stegall said.
Iron Mountain travels to West Iron County on Thursday.
