Flivvers a perfect 10
KINGSFORD – Kingsford nearly shut out Iron Mountain in high school girls tennis Monday.
The unbeaten Flivvers downed the Mountaineers 7-1, with No. 1 singles the featured match. Katie Brule needed almost three hours to outlast Hannah Tresedder 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
“Both were hitting the ball well,” said Flivver coach Mark Shanks. “It wasn’t just sit back with a lob fest.
“The match had great characteristics of short ball play and attacking. The mistakes made were aggressive ones. It was real enjoyable to watch.”
Mountaineer coach Greg Stegall called it a “knock down, drag out” match.
“That’s the best I’ve seen Hannah play,” Stegall said. “Both are outstanding players and athletes, and showed great sportsmanship.
“It was a pleasure to watch both of them play.”
Iron Mountain (12-3 season record) held its own with Kingsford (10-0) in the early stages of some matches.
Mountaineer No. 2 doubles Kate and Kathryn Bugni held a 6-5 advantage over Kingsford’s Ali VanRemortel-Jaelyn Jennings before an injury stopped the match in the first set. The Mountaineers held a 4-0 advantage until Kate Bugni suffered a knee injury.
Flivvers’ Janay Walters, Santina Bianco and Katy Hicks claimed the other singles matches.
“Kingsford is solid across the board,” Stegall said.
In addition to No. 2 doubles, Kingsford also triumphed at No. 1 with Anna Shanks-Kate Lamy, No. 3 with Megan VanPembrook-Taylor Jacobson and No. 4 with Abby Johnson-Kelsey Bennett.
“It thought it would be close (team) score-wise,” Shanks said. “They had a few leads on us early but we rode the storm the rest of the way.”
Today, Kingsford visits Westwood and Iron Mountain meets Gladstone on the Flivver courts.
