Norway edges Eagles, 20-18
STEPHENSON – Norway’s Taylor Bonetti threw three touchdowns to Austin Grayvold in the second quarter and the Knights held on for their first win of the season, 20-18, in non-conference football Friday.
“It was a big win for us,” said Norway coach Bob Madigan. “Stephenson is a good, physical team. We took some gambles and they paid off.”
Trailing 20-16, Stephenson drove the Norway 2-yard-line with under a minute to play, but Pat Guffey fell on an Eagles fumble to end the threat.
Later, facing fourth down with 20 seconds remaining, the Knights took a safety to complete the scoring.
“We had two nice defensive stands in the fourth quarter,” Madigan said. “It was a real good high school game. The kids really stepped up and played.”
An earlier red zone possession by the Eagles was stuffed at the eight-year line after a fourth down pass was tipped by Jack Rossato and fell incomplete.
Bonetti completed eight of 16 passes for 140 yards with one interception. The touchdowns came on plays of 10, 54 and 9 yards.
A bad snap on a punt set up the final Knights touchdown.
Norway’s defense was led by Zavier Gonzalez, 22 tackles; Grayvold, 20 tackles; Cody Spade, 12 tackles; and Bonetti, nine tackles.
Norway (1-2) hosts Manistique on Friday.
