Skyline Plunge: IM woman goes over the edge for respiratory health
CHICAGO – Heather Hayes of Iron Mountain is currently one of the top 10 individual fundraisers in the Respiratory Health Association’s Skyline Plunge held in Chicago.
Donations will continue to be accepted until Friday, Sept. 20.
Hayes rappelled 27 stories down the Wit Hotel above State and Lake streets in downtown Chicago on Sept. 8, and raised more than $2,300 for the cause.
Her initial fundraising goal was $1,000.
“Fund-raising for the Skyline Plunge has been very rewarding for me over the past four months. I am so inspired by my donors, almost 60 people have donated to my cause and I am so touched and forever thankful.” said Hayes.
More than 55 participants took the plunge to raise more than $85,000 for Respiratory Health Association’s lung disease research and programs.
Hayes did the event in memory of her father-in-law who she lost to lung cancer in 2008.
“I am glad my tribute to my father-in-law, Jeff Hayes, has been a success,” she said. “I think I am currently in fourth place for fundraising which ends on September 20, 2013. I have raised $2,332 and my current goal is to raise $2,500.
“Rappelling down the Wit Hotel in Chicago was a one of a kind experience,” Hayes said.
“It’s not often you get to walk down the side of a building with people in their hotel rooms waving at you and my loved ones cheering really loudly on the ground.”
“Going over the edge was the scariest part, but I knew I was doing it for a good cause and to raise awareness of lung health. I also knew I had a ton of people backing me up so I had to make them proud. Overall, the rappel was thrilling and I would definitely do it again,” she said.
Hayes, formerly Heather Davidson, is an Iron Mountain High School and Central Michigan University graduate and currently a physician assistant at Dr. Daniel Mitchell’s office.
She is married to Adam Hayes and they have one daughter, Sophia.
“The absolute best part of the rappel was lowering myself safely to the ground and seeing my two biggest fans, my husband and my daughter, standing there waiting for me.” she said.
