Singles sweep lifts Negaunee over IM, 5-3

IRON MOUNTAIN – A sweep of singles provided just enough cushion for Negaunee to edge Iron Mountain, 5-3, in a high school girls tennis match Thursday.

Negaunee, now a perfect 8-0 this season, also got a victory from No. 1 doubles.

The Miners’ toughest wins came at the top of the singles draw, with No. 1 Allison Carlson defeating Katie Brule, 6-4, 6-3, and No. 2 Abbi Kill downing Olivia Truscott, 6-3, 6-2.

“Ally and Abbi played real solid today against two good players,” Negaunee coach Kyle Saari said. “We didn’t play too bad for having a few rainouts.”

The only three-set match came at No. 4 doubles, where IM’s Hannah Hakamaki and Grace Hansen outlasted April Walimaa and Kassy Harsila, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Iron Mountain meets Kingsford on Monday.
