Florence runners face first test

FLORENCE, Wis. – Florence brings a roster of nine student athletes into the 2013 cross country season.

The Bobcats have three returning runners on the boys team, led by all-conference junior Danny Jones. Juniors Tyler Beck and Kyle Windell along with sophomore Stephen Schwartz also show varsity experience.

“Newcomer Shawn Paulson (a senior)is working hard, and sophomore Derek Fuller is also in his first year,” Bobcats coach Karen Harrison said.

Brooke Soderberg is a fourth-year runner for the Lady Cats, who have to absorb the loss of state qualifier Jennifer Goeman. Senior Alix Loker is in her second season, with Savanah Gilligan in her first year.

“Cross Country is a sport that can be nearly impossible to predict,” Harrison said. “Things can appear to be set in stone, but no one really knows what will happen until the starting gun goes off and the first test will be the Kingsford Invitational on Sept 10.”

The Bobcats also lost Mallory Lund, Mike Bogozzi and Brandon Hanson to graduation.

Julia Newton will serve as an assistant coach.
